To many people the whole idea of so-called psychic abilities is controversial. It requires believing that humans are something more than a physical body. It also requires believing that we are essentially spititual beings. Apparently, as spirits we are somehow limited in what we can learn/experience on the spiritual level of existence. So we have to occupy a physical body to grow and learn.
Admittedly, that’s a lot to assume in light of the lack of physical evidence. Still, millions of people around the world apparently DO believe in some form of this philosophy. In fact, many of the worlds’ religions actually support this viewpoint. Both Christianity and Judaism incorporate the terms “spirit” or “soul” in defining the non-physical part of a human being. The Eastern religions of Taoism, Buddhism and Hindu, see the body as secondary in importance.
New Age followers reject the “physical body only” concept as well. So it appears that the majority of us do actually believe that in some way, we are much more than a conscious, physical body.
This then poses the question, why? Why are so many people convinced that they are more than physical? Do we in somehow “sub-consciously know” this to be fact? The philosopher Plato offered an explanation in the form of what he called the “Transmigration of Souls”. He proposed that we come from an ideal spiritual “dimension”, but the trauma of physical birth erases any rememberance of it. So we spend our lives gaining experiences that ultimately teach us our true nature as spirits inside human bodies. The suggestion is that we are actually eternal spirits who may occupy many bodies through the centuries to learn and grow.
As outlandish as this may sound, there may be some evidence to support the idea. There have been many reports of little children describing people, places and experiences they’ve never encountered in their short lifetime. It’s even been experienced by adults under hypnosis!

Psychic abilities are supposedly based on an interaction between two peoples’ energies. This is said to occure on the non-physical or energy level. So what the electron microscope reveals to the physicist in a lab today, and what the “seers” of long ago saw with their mind, is a remarkable world composed of 100% energy. It appears that our scientific world is melding with old-time spirituality, and they’re both looking at an identical reality!
So it seems like it’s not all that difficult to conclude that there’s more to what we call “reality” than what we can experience with our senses. We believe in many things we can’t physically see, such as radio waves, microwaves and so on. We use them every day. I seriously doubt that these are the only unseen forces existing in our big universe.
The purpose of this article is to make people think. It’s not designed to convince you of anything. But the issue of psychic abilities is not a simple one that can simply be written off as mumbo jumbo. Believe in it or don’t believe in it, the choice is yours. But at least engage in some appropriate research before deciding.
