Neck pain is a very common affliction. More than 2/3 of adults in the US report at least one incidence of neck pain in their lives. It is very easy to strain your neck. You can do this at work, during exercise, even when turning over in bed.

It’s so common we even use the experience as a way to characterize someone or something frustrating – your boss or your kids are sometimes “a pain in the neck,” but so is neck pain! It’s miserable, and very common, but also quite treatable.

What to do when you have neck pain? There are a number of options. At home remedies work for some people, but if you need more help you can have physical therapy, alternative treatments, really all kinds of treatments are out there.

Medicine is helpful for many sufferers. Over the counter medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol) help with pain, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) help also to reduce inflammation. On the other hand, if the pain is caused by a displaced cervical disc, then surgery may be needed.

It’s up to you how to treat your neck pain but it requires careful consideration of factors like intensity and duration of pain.

In the case of acute neck pain, or pain that comes on suddenly from accident or injury, doctors recommend resting in bed, using cold therapy (ice pack), and immobilizing the neck via neck brace or collar. This is essentially the opposite of treatment for chronic neck pain, which is typically physical therapy and heat therapy.

Physical therapy is a good choice that will involve addressing cause and prevention as well as remediating pain. The therapist will help with massage or stretching, exercise or electrical stimulation of muscles. But, even more importantly, the client is told about risk factors and preventative care.

Alternative therapies also work very well for some people who prefer not to take prescription drugs or go with traditional therapy. In one recent study from Europe, three treatment groups were compared. The group that received traditional Chinese acupuncture had better short- and long-term pain relief than did the groups receiving laser treatment or massage therapy.

Regardless of your choice of treatment, you need to find a certified professional to provide it. This is important whether you want acupuncture, physical therapy, or massage. If you get someone who doesn’t know what they are doing and performs the treatment wrong, you can be further injured. You may also want to consider combining therapies for better results.

You can find hot tubs in a variety of places. Some common ones are hotels, apartment complexes, cruise ships, homes, and gyms. These are also called spas. Hot tubs or spas can be made of various materials, including plastic, ceramic, or wood.

In a hot tub, you soak and relax in water that is warmed up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Part of the relaxation of a hot tub soak comes from the jets that churn the water and provide massage to the people in the tubs.

This warm water that massages is very therapeutic. People with arthritis or sore muscles report relief from the spa experience. If you spend time in a hot tub, having hydrotherapy, you can expect to have lasting benefit including less chronic pain, lower stress levels and resolved sleeplessness.

Consumers who are interested in purchasing a hot tub for home use can do so with great success. Still, they need to educate themselves to ensure they get the one best suited to their needs.

Ideally you’ll have the opportunity to “wet test” a model of tub before deciding. This way you can get into an assembled model and test it out to see how it feels. Yes, this is less convenient. But you need to know if the pressure and temperature are right, and if it is big enough. Otherwise, it’ll be a lot less convenient if you buy the wrong tub and are stuck with it.

There are many situations where a hot tub would provide wonderful fun. You can have a hot tub party. You can have a romantic time with your partner. You could get together with friends and family and hang out and relax.

Summer afternoons soaking in a hot tub can be fun and relaxing. Many people think of using their tubs in spring and summer. But really you can use hot tubs all year long. Taking a soak in the deliciously warm water in the depths of cold winter can be wonderful.

If you want to have a way to have fun and relax all year long, invest in a hot tub. They are a wonderful product, easy to maintain, and therapeutic as well.

Massage therapy techniques come in many different forms and hundreds of different packages. Some have a medical purpose, some have a stress relief purpose, and some have a more spiritual purpose. If you are looking to get a massage, what kind should you get? What is right for you, and how will you know if you do not understand some of the biggest massage principles?

Acupressure is a great catch-all for medical massages. If you have some form of health issue and it is giving you a lot of pain or discomfort, this could be the one for you. It is a Chinese practice directly related to acupuncture. Only here, the pressure points are rubbed instead of stuck with a needle. These points are believed to be the center of all the body. By manipulating them, you can help control your health.

Barefoot massages are a unique luxury and can be very helpful to people who have very physical jobs. The more physical the job, the deeper the tension goes into your muscles. One of the best ways to get the tension out is to lay down while a therapist stands on your back and walks along your muscles. It is usually just a back massaging technique, since few muscles are strong enough to need (or to bear) the weight of a person. It can be dangerous if not done right, but when it is done well, the feet can work wonders for soreness.

Deep tissue massages are one step more intense than the barefoot massage. This massage therapy is for people who have been injured or who have very high levels of tension. The goal is to work on the muscles deep down, under the first layer of muscle. These are very rarely worked upon, which means that they could be sore after. If you are a more delicate person, you may find this to be painful.

Postural integration involves movement from both parties and a lot of therapeutic emotional work. It is primarily a deep tissue massage, but the patient moves arms and legs in long gestures and does several different exercises for emotional health. These exercises depend on the therapist.

Reflexology massages are strictly for hands and feet. They get little enough good treatment when one considers how often they are really used. They are carefully rubbed down and the few muscles in these appendages are fully loosened. There is also the spiritual belief that your internal organs are directly connected to your hands and feet, making a massage on the outside also be a massage on the inside.

The stone massage is the least intense of all of these. It has more for your own personal relaxation and some mild stress relief. It can feel very good, especially if the weather is cold out. Carefully selected stones are heated up in water to a certain temperature. They are set on your body at crucial muscle points so you muscles ease.

Swedish massages are the last of the major ones. While most of the others involve just rubbing the muscles, the Swedes believe that muscles need more kinds of action. They vibrate and jab the muscles, create friction for them, and then ease it by sweeping the hands over them. It will be a standard massage in a very different way. Most of these massages can be combined with one another to form their own special type. You should learn what your body wants from you.

Anybody can benefit from the benefits of a hand held massager, regardless of your physical activity level. The working of a hand held simply involves the application of the right amount of pressure and vibrations to sore or tired muscles of human body. Though, majority of users confine its use for massaging neck and back. Let’s understand the advantages of having a personal massager at home.

Reason One: Reducing Aches and Pains Naturally

Repetitive activities that you engage in throughout your day can cause an increase in pain. Things such as sitting in front of your computer for several hours a day can put a lot of strain on your neck and shoulders. If your job is more physically active, then being on your feet and moving around all day can cause aches in your legs and back. A personal massager helps to relieve you of such pains and aches. That’s one big advantage of massagers-you can avoid pain medications. Personal massager enables you to get rid of pain by working directly in the muscle, causing it to relax, and that’s quite unlike treating pains with medicines that treat the symptoms.

Reason Two: Reducing Stress

So many people seem to be unaware of how stress can affect their lives. Remaining under stress prevents you from concentrating at work and affects your efficiency, while draining you of energy. When you have high stress levels, your body releases a hormone called cortisol, which can increase your body fat.

Reason Three: Making Exercise More Effective

The use of a hand held massager will definitely prove beneficial for you, if you work out regularly. Flexibility can be as important to fitness as strength, endurance or stamina. A massager helps to get your muscles loosen and that improves their suppleness. The improved suppleness of muscles enables you to go thru your exercising regimen more effectively. You would appreciate that relaxed muscles reduce the chances of having cramps or getting injured during work outs. This dual combination of massage and regular stretching surely helps to perform better while exercising.

Reason Four: Portability

One big plus of having a hand held massager is that you can carry it with you wherever you like. You may use it while watching TV or reading a book and may even carry it to your bedroom for use just before retiring for the night. They are small enough that you can pack it up and bring it with you when you travel. You may be surprised to know that some carry it with them to work and use it during breaks for relaxing a bit.
